SIPCOT Cuddlaore gets a surprise visit from the LAEC
The industries in SIPCOT Cuddlaore got an unpleasant surprise yesterday when the Local Area Environment Committee chairman, Adv. T. Mohan, along with other LAEC members joined the SACEM monitors on a midnight pollution patrol in the area. The team spent more than two hours in the area visiting every part of the industrial complex and observing and recording instances of environmental pollution and chemical odours. Monitors report that the chemical odour in the area ranged from "noticeable" to "intense" and visibility was extremely low in some parts of the industrial complex due to heavy smoke.

The visit was conducted without even informing the Pollution Control Board because of concerns that information shared with the regulator is often leaked to the industries. "The TNPCB seems more keen to protect polluters than it is to protect public health. They have a long way to go before communities and public begin trusting them," said Nityanand Jayaraman, an advisor to the SIPCOT Area Community Environment Monitors.

What were the conditions in SIPCOT during the midnight patrol? Read Report here.

Groundtruths: Status of Hazardous Wastes and Pollution in SIPCOT Chemical Estate, Cuddalore

KILLER TSUNAMI'S IMPACT ON SIPCOT INDUSTRIAL ESTATE

  1. The river water has washed out the toxic sludge from behind the SPIC factory, although the landfill seemed untouched.
  2. Water had entered CUSECS 6 near Victory Chemicals, which is located virtually on the banks of the River Uppanar, in flagrant violation of the Coastal Regulation Zone notification. It may be pointed out at this point that the Tamilnadu Pollution Control Board has chosen to ignore, even sought to regularize, this violation despite repeated reminders about this infraction. The extent of damage sustained at this pump house is not known.
  3. The mountain of toxic wastes stored behind Victory Chemicals towers above the flimsy compound wall abutting the river. Much of this waste has been washed out into the river.
  4. The condition of the marine effluent outfall is not known, but given the force of the wave and the currents generated on 26 December, it is important to assess the condition of the effluent outfall.(Link to the letter sent to the SCMC and PCB about the effects of Tsunami on SIPCOT)
