Fire
accident and chemical tank explosion in EID Parrys

Cuddalore, 29 March 2006: A fire accident and explosion in
Ethanol tank was reported from EID Parrys unit,
located in Thygavalli panchayat
of Cuddalore district, few kilometers away from
the SIPCOT complex. According to the source the fire broke out in the godown of the factory due to electrical short circuit
which later caused the explosion in the Ethanol tank near by. It is
reported that two
workers (P. Radhkrishnan and K. Kamalakannan) out of eight present on the spot, were seriously injured in the
accident and have been admitted to a private hospital in Cuddalore town.
Though
the unit has filed a First Information Report (FIR) with the Cuddalore Port Police Station it has not informed the
Factories Inspectorate about the accident as mandatory under the Factories
Act. The TNPCB has also not been informed about the explosion in the
Ethanol tank.
A letter
compliant reporting the accident and also requesting action against the
unit for not complying with the Factories Act, has been sent independently
by SACEM to the Factories Inspectorate. SACEM members are awaiting response
from the department.
